Curly hair is a godsend. Sure, you might not think that all the time, but curly hair has so many benefits! Like natural volume, which adds a certain whimsy to any hairstyle. With braids, you'll never have to worry about them being flat — the curls add bulk that many straight-haired women load up on styling powder for. And topknots are never, ever puny with curls!
Because we wanted to show off how versatile curly hair is, we recruited celebrity hairstylist Richard Collins, whose clients include Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Helen Mirren, to create these seven gorgeous looks that any curly girl can replicate at home — a look for every day of the week!
In terms of products you'll need on standby, Richard suggests something to tame frizz and keep your mane controlled. Schwarzkopf curling cream is his favorite. “It's also light. You don't want anything too heavy on curly hair, or any hair, really.”
So what advice does Richard have for those who have curly hair? “A lot of people with curly hair want it straight. Try not to flat iron it too much; try not to use a curling iron too much. Definitely use something with a heat protector in it.” And in terms of washing your hair, Richard suggests washing your curls every fourth day. “And I think you can get away with not using shampoo. Sometimes you can get away with just using conditioner. You need to use shampoo, but it's not necessary every single time. I think it's a mistake that people use it every single time. Unless you're Spinning or something. In between, try to use conditioner,” says Richard.
